As the popularity of the ketogenic diet increases, the popularity of MCT oil increases. Not only among people who use the KETO diet, but also those who are interested in dietetics and healthy eating, the topic of oil MCT is often raised and causes interest. What is it, where does it get and how does it affect the body?

What is MCT oil?

MCT oil, or rather a group of fat, MCT is medium -chain fatty acids that are distinguished by the whole process of their digestion and absorption. The whole group of medium -chain fatty acids has similar properties and structure, depending on the amount of coal in the chain, its length is greater. MCT fats are those that have 8 to 10 carbon atoms in their chain, the exception is lauric acid, containing 12 carbon atoms, but it differs from the others and its structure and properties, however, resemble long -chain fatty acids. I mention it for a reason - a significant part of the fatty acids of coconut oil, which is often mentioned as part of the subject of MCT oil, is laurel acid. MCT fats are digested in an interesting, unusual way for other fats. By default, the fat digestion process begins in the stomach, with the help of the enzyme - gastric lipase. In order for Lipaza to have a chance to initially start digging fats, they must be in the form of an eminted - small drops of fat. And as I said in the previous paragraph - MCT oils are in the form of chains. The next stage of fat digestion occurs in the small intestine, with yellow, which is produced in the liver. Bile emulsifies fats so that the pancreatic lipase can then put them. The situation is different in the case of MCT oils - these fats dissolve quite well in water, thanks to which their digestion does not require the presence of lipase and yellow, because they absorb directly into the bloodstream from intestinal epithelial cells, and then transported by portal vein to the liver. It makes their digestion faster!

MCT oil - why is it important in the Ktoo diet?

The main assumption of the ketogenic diet is to increase the intake of fats to reduce the amount of carbohydrates. Why does such a restrictive diet have many supporters after all? What guides the Keto diet is stimulating the production of ketone bodies, which are to be a much better source of energy. Keton bodies arise through ketosis, i.e. oxidation of fatty acids that occurs when the body feels glucose deficiency. And glucose is the basic energy source in the body. So what do people on a ketogenic diet value MCT oil? Mainly for being easily digested, it allows you to accelerate metabolic processes, provides satiety for a long time and has a positive effect on the work of the stomach and intestines. However, it is worth remembering not to exceed the recommended daily dose so that no side effects appear.

Health advantages and use of MCT oil

What are the advantages of using MCT oil in the diet? Studies have proven that MCT oil included in the diet has a positive effect on weight reduction. How is this happening? The ease of their digestion, compared to long -chain fats, makes the metabolism of fat digestion better and faster, and MCT oil itself leaves satiety for a long time, thanks to which the amount of food consumed during the day drops, and thus the number of calories consumed. The hormone of satiety also has an impact on the inhibition of appetite - Leptin, which after eating MCT oil remained at a high level longer than after long -chain fats. MCT oil also affects the concentration of triglycerides in the body. Their high concentration is associated with diseases of the circulatory system, as well as pancreas and liver. Studies have shown that regular consumption of MCT oil, instead of long-chain oils, reduces triglycerides. MCT fats have bactericidal and fungicidal properties, which support the health of the stomach, intestines and the entire digestive system. The ketogenic diet is a diet that has been proven to alleviate the symptoms of drug-resistant epilepsy. And when MCT fats are included in the diet, the effects of reducing the number of epilepsy attacks will be even better.

How to choose the right MCT oil?

MCT oil can be found in the form of oil or powder. Depending on your preferences, you can adjust the introduction of this oil in a form that is convenient for you. In our KETO MEAL product, MCT oil is in powder form, so you can prepare this complete meal without adding additional fats. This is a convenient option because preparing such a meal takes literally a moment! If you want to choose MCT oil due to its chain length, we distinguish:
  • C6 - caproic acid or hexanoic acid - it is quite rare as an ingredient of ready-made MCT oils, due to its unpleasant smell and taste. However, it is quickly and easily digested.
  • C8 - caprylic acid or octanoic acid - the most popular medium-chain fat, which has proven anti-inflammatory, antifungal and digestive system supporting properties. It is also considered the most qualitative, supporting the body's entry into ketosis.
  • C10 - capric acid or decanoic acid - it is often found in products together with C8 acid, because both have similar antibacterial and antiviral effects and also have a beneficial effect on the digestive system. Also considered qualitative, but also gentler for the stomach and intestines of people who only introduce MCT oils to their diet.
  • C12 - lauric acid or dodecanoic acid - due to its structure, it resembles long-chain fats, so its health-promoting effects are not as high as in the case of C8 and C10. It is a component of palm and coconut oil.
It is worth choosing oils that have shorter chains than C12. However, due to its taste and smell, C6 is difficult to drink or include in the diet in any other form, so the best compromise are C8 and C10 oils and the oils they contain.

How to use MCT oil?

  • Start with small amounts - If you're new to using MCT oil, start with as little as a teaspoon a day to prevent unwanted side effects such as digestive discomfort. Add to drinks and meals - MCT oil can be added to various meals, e.g. smoothies or salads. Remember that it appears in our KETO MEAL! Due to its quick energy delivery, MCT oil is a great addition to a pre-workout meal, providing additional energy for exercise. Do not exceed the recommended dose - even if you have been using MCT oil for some time, do not overdo it. If used in excess, it may lead to intestinal problems. Integrate with a balanced diet - MCT oil should be one of the elements of the diet, not its only component. Make sure you also have other sources of fat in your diet, but also an adequate supply of proteins or carbohydrates, depending on your diet.
