The product has an all plant-based, natural formulation, but due to the adaptogen content, it is best to consult your doctor before consuming the product.
Adaptogens are plants with unique properties affecting the body and mind that are able to adapt the body to adverse conditions and restore it to its normal physiological functions. They have the ability to adapt the body especially in situations of stress, tension, mental overload, or physical exertion. Adaptogens direct the body to cope with the three stages of stress: the stressful stimulus, immunization against stress, and exhaustion of the body when the stimulus disappears. When they are used, the body does not deplete its energy reserves that it needs to cope with the stressful situation, so we do not experience fatigue, fatigue, and headaches after the stress stops. They also prevent such negative stress-related changes as increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, decreased immunity, and chronic fatigue.
Adaptogenic plants help maintain homeostasis, or internal balance, in the body by regulating various processes. They work holistically, because they do not affect the work of one organ or system in the body, but support the work of all. Their action is based on exerting morphological, biochemical and physiological changes on cells (by affecting the action of enzymes) and organs (by regulating hormonal balance).
There are two adaptogens in Calm Cacao – ashwagandha and reishi.
Reishi (otherwise known as Yellow Lacewing) is a mushroom with adaptogenic properties, native to Asia. It is valued in natural Chinese medicine for its properties – which earned it the name of the mushroom of immortality. It stimulates the immune system and prevents cancer thanks to its betaglucan content. Reishi inhibits the formation and growth of tumors, plus it has a protective effect against free radicals and reduces cellular damage. Reishi also contains triterpenoids – compounds that lower blood cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure and prevent atherosclerosis. Thanks to these properties, reishi is used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The triterpenoids also have an antihistamine effect, which reduces the severity of allergies.
Ashwagandha (also known as vitania ashwagandha, Indian ginseng and sleeping sickness) is a shrubby plant, which occurs mainly in Asia, but also in Africa and in the Mediterranean countries. Special attention should be paid to ashwagandha roots, which are the richest source of active substances characteristic for this plant – vitanolides, glycovitanolides and vitanosides.
Ashwagandha roots have been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine (natural medicine originating in India), where it has been prized for its ability to calm and provide a sense of peace and harmony. Ashwagandha supports the nervous system, including the brain, thus improving learning ability and concentration. In addition, it improves the body’s immunity due to the active compounds it contains. The vitanolides contained in ashwagandha root have antibacterial and anticancer effects. Glycovitanolides act adaptogenically, that is, they help the body adapt to unfavorable environmental conditions, such as stress or physical or mental overload. Vitanosides have the ability to increase mental performance by reducing tension and anxiety.
Regular intake of ashwagandha helps lower “bad” cholesterol and raise “good” cholesterol, which is important in the prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Vitania sluggisha also helps with sleep problems because it relieves anxiety and reduces the amount of cortisol (stress hormone) secreted in the body.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied through the diet. It can be found naturally in foods such as pulses, dairy products, meat, spinach and bananas, but the amount of tryptophan in these products is very low. Tryptophan is responsible for supporting the nervous system, its deficiency manifests itself as a decrease in energy, bad mood, and in extreme cases – depression. It is involved in the production of serotonin (hormone of happiness), and also reduces excitability and tension, which contributes to improving mood and well-being. It also affects the production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating the daily cycle and sleep. As a result, tryptophan improves the quality of sleep, facilitates falling asleep and prevents insomnia.
Niacin (vitamin PP, vitamin B3) is a vitamin, which has an influence, among others, on correct functioning of the nervous system. It helps in maintaining correct psychological functions, as well as contributes to correct energy metabolism by participating in metabolism of carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids in organism. In addition, an adequate intake of niacin contributes to the reduction of feelings of fatigue and tiredness.
