The new food pyramid
Food pyramid It consists of several levels containing strictly defined groups of food products. These are, of course, recommendations for people who do not need to follow any special diet for health reasons. Scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health, instead of food products, placed physical activity and weight control at the base of the pyramid, which are intended to bring modern society closer to taking better care of health. On the next floors there are vegetables and fruits, whole grains, dairy products, meat and fish, and at the very top healthy fats (i.e. vegetable oils, nuts). Outside the pyramid there are products that should include as little as possible in our diet (e.g. white sugar, salt, red meat).Level I – physical activity
Physical activity included in the food pyramid is understood only as classic sport, but also walking, climbing stairs, Nordic walking, etc. According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), a minimum of 30-45 minutes should be spent on physical activity during the day to reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.Level II – vegetables and fruits
Vegetables can be consumed practically without restrictions, in accordance with WHO recommendations - the more, the better. Please note that this group does not include potatoes, which may increase blood glucose levels. Fruit is also one of the pillars of a healthy diet. It is worth noting, however, that it is a source of simple sugars, the consumption of which should be limited. Therefore, fruit should take up less space on the "plate" than vegetables.Level III – cereal products
Cereal products are placed at this level, with whole grain products recommended. The basis of the diet should therefore be brown bread, brown rice, various groats, bran, cereal flakes, and whole grain pasta.Level IV – dairy products
The penultimate level contains dairy products, including milk, yogurts, kefirs, yellow and white cheeses, and, if necessary, supplements containing vitamin D and calcium. These are other products that should be a variety of meals, not the basis of the diet.Level V – legumes, meat and fish (without nuts and seeds)
The level above are sources of complete protein in the diet. There are legumes, tofu, seeds, as well as fish, lean meat and eggs. However, it should be remembered that products from this level should constitute a diversification of the diet, not its basis. Therefore, fish, eggs and lean meat should be eaten much less frequently than plant products.Level VI – fats, nuts and seeds
Healthy oils and fats at the top of the new food pyramid include nuts, olive oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, margarines free from "trans" fats, as well as oils obtained from fatty sea fish, such as salmon.Outside the pyramid
